Home at Last!

It's good to be back. We had a great day yesterday, though. We started by happily leaving Danvers and getting on the road for Boston! A short drive later and we were...past the city? Boston's new Big Dig tunnel system was so good that it funneled us straight under the city and out the other side. We had to turn around and go back. :-)

Remember how I talked about the Freedom Trail in one of my first posts? We thought it was just a simple thing involving printing a map and following the audio prompts in the MP3s. Well, it turns out that this Trail is a city-wide, extremely well known and well toured thing. There's a red line painted on the sidewalk through the whole city leading the way.

Anyway, we knew where the trail started (Boston Common), but we didn't know how to get there. We drove through the city, occasionally catching glimpses of the red line ("There it is! Follow it!" "Where'd it go? I lost it!") Finally we found the Common and parked in the garage under it (which, by the way, is one of the nicest parking garages I've ever seen). We came up to the surface and hunted around for the start of the Trail. As we walked, we suddenly saw familiar faces walking toward us. It was the Blue Man Group! They were doing a video shoot walking around the park interacting with people. They were hilarious, as usual. I took pictures that I'll post later.

We eventually found the start of the Trail and set off. It wound through the city for over two miles stopping at places like the cemetery where Samuel Adams, John Hancock and Paul Revere are buried, the Old North Church, where Paul Revere looked up to see the lanterns, King's Chapel, one of the oldest churches in the nation, and several other stops. We had a lot of fun exploring the city and following the Trail.

We stopped for lunch at Quincy Market and watched a few minutes of various street performers (slightly boring) before returning to the car for the long drive home. Suddenly, in Connecticut, all the cars stopped. It was almost unmoving traffic. We rolled a couple of feet every few minutes. We were stuck there for at least 45 minutes. A guy jogged past at one point, apparently from a car behind us. He jogged back a while later, saying that there was a huge accident. But just as suddenly as it had started, it began moving again and we were back to the speed limit in seconds with no sign of any accident. So...we still have no idea what really caused it. It wasn't fun, though.

Due to another wrong turn, we took the highway too far and ended up in Delaware. No worries, I know my way home from there. But that added to our list of states visited yesterday, making 6 total. Not too bad. :-)

I suppose that concludes our road trip reports. It was fun and we definitely hope to make another trip somewhere before we get old. :-)

  1. Glad you had a safe trip. Maybe I'm blind or stupid, but I don't see any pictures here. Where can I find your pictures of the wedding and 'stuff'? Our camera was broken so we didn't get any of our own. It was good to see you two!
