France to open iTunes

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000085&sid=a4bKype4P_JM&refer=europe

This has been in the works for a while, but it now looks like it might actually happen. France is about to become the first country to mandate that iTunes and other online music download services open their service to all music players. This would mean that a song downloaded through iTunes could be saved to and played on any player, not just the iPod.

Nobody's sure yet whether iTunes will close up shop in France as a result of the new law or whether they'll bow to the demands.

Personally, I think it's about freakin' time. Once paid for, music should be able to be played anywhere. This is the biggest reason why I hate iTunes and iPods. If the music were completely open, I might be tempted to buy one.

In my opinion, this is where online music is headed. Copyright laws are being rethought in all areas including music, movies and books and pretty soon all will be open. That's my prediction...and this is a good first step.

I can't wait to see what happens...
